Late 16th-Century Doublet

Posted on October 5, 2009 by Trystan

I first wore the outfit at the SCA West Kingdom October Crown. I wore the doublet with a cartridge-pleated skirt made of purple tone-on-tone stripe drapery type fabric that I’d made a few months earlier (for an outfit that never panned out). And the weekend before this event, I made a tall-crowned hat inspired by the ones popular from about 1590 to 1620s and beyond. I built a wired buckram frame and covered it in pleated black wool. The trims are purple and black ostrich feathers, plus a purple ribbon rosette accented with a big gold brooch.

Update:

I’ve worn the outfit many times, including the doublet with a black wool skirt or the doublet without sleeves and with a blackworked linen shirt. It’s a versatile and attractive piece of my SCA wardrobe.

Done! Two chair cushions covered. Not the most perfect work, but functional. And fast — I patterned it from scratch & sewed 2 of them (with zippers) in a weekend! I’ve been sewing for at least 40 years, but I’ve only set maybe a handful of zippers! Curse of mostly pre-20th-century fashion fan! Time for a new project! My current #wipwednesday is a (sort of) 18th-c. Levite overgown. Not like I can make anything strictly historical anymore! I’ve consulted @demoder & @modernmantuamaker’s books, tho I started with a Winego paper pattern (the pieces are shaped close enough). From my stash, I’m using a yummy dark pink silk satin for the main body, with a burgundy taffeta collar & lighter burgundy damask for the sash. Oh & I’ll trim the front edge in black skull lace. Flowers blooming, plus a couple colorful houses, seen around my neighborhood yesterday. Have only “unpacked” from Carnevale in the sense that my bags are emptied. The contents are piled all over my house now. But I did dig out this one prize — skull earrings from my favorite jewelry shop @capriccivenezia! I swore I wasn’t going to buy anything there this year, but these were in the window. Little signs of life from the new plantings in my redone backyard! My last views of Venice as I left far too early in the morning. Just a quick pic from my last Carnevale party, Noah’s Ark. I used @leonardautie’s leopard-print silk breeches & waistcoat for an 18th-century-ish leopard costume. I added a wig with ears, faux fur mitts & spats with claws, a tail, cat-eye glasses, makeup. I didn’t end up going to the ball that I’d made this gown for, so I wore it out & about today for a gondola trip & around town with friends. And I swapped the inspo painting’s wig for my favorite crazy goth wig mixed with my own purple hair.
