I'm a guest at a gothic wedding -- what should I wear?

Answer
Both of these questions have the same basic answer. A wedding guest should not draw attention to him or her self. After all, it is the bride and groom's day -- they deserve the spotlight. Don't upstage them by dressing in a way that attracts attention.

If you're a goth and you're going to a wedding, try to tone down your outfit. Subdued dark colors with simple jewelry and makeup will work for most situations. In most urban areas, wearing all-black to a wedding is no longer a social faux pas, but be careful. Some very conservative families might take offense at guests in all-black.

Do dress for the level of formality of the wedding. If it's a very formal affair, wear a proper suit or a dress. If it's a more casual wedding, dress more casually (but remember, very, very few weddings are so casual that ripped t-shirts are appropriate!). If it's an outdoor summer wedding, try not to wear an all-black outfit. At least add a white shirt, so that you don't stand out quite as much.

If you're a guest at a gothic wedding, you have a little more leeway in what you wear. But you still don't want to upstage your hosts. Do not wear you're most incredibly goth-as-fuck outfit, complete with ultra-wild hair and makeup! Go for something that's not ostentatious. Simple and elegant never hurts.

If you're concerned about what you should wear to the wedding, ask the couple for suggestions. They can tell you if it's a very formal wedding or if their families are very conservative and easily shocked.
