Made great progress on the Carnivale gown today, although these photos will not seem like much. However, I’ve now sewn all the bits that Kendra draped and pinned on me. The only things left on the black francaise portion are to bind the back neck edge, draft sleeves, and hem the skirt.
The only semi-hard part of that is the sleeves. I’m going to scale up the ones in Hunnisett, and those usually work for me. Also, this era’s sleeves have lots of room for futzing — I was looking through the Kyoto book today, which has some good close-ups of sleeve heads and there’s a lot of fullness in the back. Very forgiving, imo.
Yeah, can’t really tell the difference between this and the previous pinned-together state. But trust me, no more pins are involved.
After the sleeves, I’ll drape the petticoat over the pockethoops, which is mostly just tedious in that there’s a ton of fabric to deal with and pleat. But not hard. Then the stomacher, also not hard.
And finally, TrimLand! I could spend years there 🙂 I don’t have years, unfortunately. But I’ll keep trimming this gown up until I have to pack it!
Had to do a fair amount of hand-sewing today. It was pretty craptastic. I tried, oh yes, I tried. My problem isn’t as much stitch length, it’s that I can’t sew in a straight line. Drunk stitches (though I swear liquor did not touch my lips at the time!).
Tried to get proof, though it’s difficult to show in poor lighting with black fabric…
