Question
How can I have a gothic wedding on a budget?

Answer
The exact same way anyone has a wedding on a budget. Honestly, it's not that difficult, it just takes a lot of planning and compromising. You have to weigh which things are more important to you, and eliminate or at least skimp on the rest.

For example, the bride's gown may be very, very important to you. But the idea of a giant, multi-level cake doesn't interest you or your fiance. So spend the money on the dress and have a simple cake made by a handy friend.

Also remember that every wedding does not *have to have* all the stuff listed in those bridal magazines. You might not want 10 bridesmaids or a limo or disposable cameras for every guest or favours or rice or a church ceremony or a guestbook or corsages or any of the other millions of things that the Wedding Industry says you must have in order to have a proper wedding. Screw them, what do they know? Only have the things that will make you and your fiance happy and fulfilled.

This is also a good time to figure out what you can do for yourself or barter from your friends. Maybe you could sew the bridal gown or make decorations and favours at home. A musician friend could play piano for the ceremony or act as DJ during the reception. A photographer friend could take pictures or video of the event. You could even have a friend perform the ceremony if she or he gets a free Universal Life Church minister's certificate (yes, it is legal in many states including California). When you ask people to help out, make sure to show them your gratitude before, during, and after the wedding. A special gift is nice, but even a heartfelt card or letter can be enough.
